It is the eye for us to pry and understand about Colombia history. In El Socorro every building tells a reason why you MUST visit here and now the story has begun.
Founded in 1681, El Socorro is a town in northeast Colombia province Santander (or departmento, which is used more commonly here). It used to be the capital of Santander during 1862-1886. El Socorro is most famous as the cradle for the independence of Colombia against Spanish colonization (la cuna de independencia). In July of year 1810 here started the first statement of independence. All those can be spotted in the town in various old buildings in the town. Being one in the network of heritage towns (Red Turistica de Pueblos Patrimonio., its cultural and historical heritage is widely recognized.
To arrive here it is 3 hours by bus (161km) from Bucaramanga, the capital of Santander province or 20 minutes from Sangil. On the other direction (southwest), it´s 5 to 6 hours by bus from Bogotá. The time depends on how many stops on the way and weather. There are many reasons why we MUST visit El Socorro. Its breath-taking sceneries, unbelievable level of safety and peacefulness, friendly people, pleasant weather as well as the profundity of the history here are all part of them.
Featured in ¨Learn Spanish in Colombia ¨ initiative (http://www.spanishincolombia.gov.co/en/), another important reason why we MUST visit here is its suitability for studying Spanish, especially for foreigners. Unlike big cities where the living cost is incredibly high for studying Spanish, here in Socorro you can live and study with minimum amount of cost. Without Colombian friends who can help translate, we are fully immersed in Spanish! And we all know how this can boost language study. Finally there is good education in Spanish learning for foreigners, which has been recognized more and more in public (http://www.spanishincolombia.gov.co/pagina/otras-instituciones ).
Above is just a brief introduction about El Socorro. More information will be provided about El Socorro in our following series. In the end, we would like to ask: What is in El Socorro that attracted you here? And what would you like to know more about El Socorro, no matter is about travel or Spanish learning or history? Feel free to share with us your experience or your doubts below and we will answer that in our next post. See you in El Socorro!
